Franny the Fearless Firefly

Murphey, C. (2016). Franny the Fearless Firefly. Book Cravers Publishing, LLC.

Children's Picture Book / Rhyming / Life Lessons

I give this book 5 out of 5 Stars

Blurb: Franny the Fearless Firefly is about a firefly named Franny, who learns a valuable lesson when her fearlessness gets her into trouble.  Focusing on words beginning with the letter ‘F,’ this book introduces the young reader to alliteration.  Franny the Fearless Firefly is the first in what will be a series of illustrated books that use a creature, the character’s name, and a personality trait starting with a common letter.

Hall Ways Review:  Frankly, Franny the Fearless Firefly is fabulous and fun!

I am a huge fan of children's books, like Franny the Fearless Firefly, that have the potential to be used in a wide variety of ways. Of course, primarily, a children's book needs to be pleasurable for children to read and enjoy. (check.) Equally important is that the book is well-written and models effective writing that just might inspire young readers to be good writers, too. (check. check.) Add to this formula colorful, stimulating illustrations, excellent life-lessons, and interesting characters (check. check. check.), and the book knocks the ball out of the park. Author and Illustrator Christina Murphey has indeed hit a home run with this absolutely delightful story.

The first time I read the book, my head was spinning as the librarian and teacher in me thought of ways to use the book as a teaching tool for the very young and even older students.  The second time I read the book, I viewed it through a young reader’s lens and was thoroughly entertained by the somewhat mischievous main character, Franny, and the rich, engaging illustrations (LOVE Franny’s dad’s mustache).  And then I read the book again because it’s that kind of book: a re-reader. (Yes, I made-up that word, but it works.)

Another plus to Franny the Fearless Firefly is the excellent Bonus Content section at the end of the book.  It includes directed reading questions, fast facts, and definitions at the along with sources cited. There are so many learning applications for the book, but the best thing about it is that readers will learn something, whether they realize it or not.

Thank you to the author who provided me an eBook copy in exchange for my honest review – the only kind I give.
